PC, View from Altoona's 17th Street Bridge, 1972 |
Description: |
Agnes. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here from Altoona's 17th Street Bridge are the Penn Central's mainline tracks in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. Not a moving train to be seen! Al the left is the Penn Central's Passenger Station, not long before it's demolished to make way for the 10th Avenue Expressway. At the right are structures which were part of the Pennsylvania Railroad's 12th Street Car Shops. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. |

PC 5451, RS3, 1972 |
Description: |
Agnes. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #5451, #9944, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Although coupled to a fully-loaded mineral train, they're just sitting there with engines off pending the resumption of rail traffic in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. Note how rusty these once-highly-polished rails have become! |

Description: |
Agnes. Here is the first of two successive original photos that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #7948 and #2438. They're departing the Yard on their way up the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a "high-and-wide extra" bound for Pittsburgh and points West. It's just about the only thing moving out of Altoona in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. In this context, the Fireman has just received train orders from the WORKS Tower Operator. When the end of the train and the cabin car reach this point, the train's Conductor will also receive orders by the same means. The elaborate light tower depicted at the right was constructed originally for the New York World's Fair in 1939 and was re-erected here after the Fair closed. |

Agnes. Here is the second of two successive original photos that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #7948 and #2438. They're about to pass under the 7th Street Bridge on their way up the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a "high-and-wide extra" bound for Pittsburgh and points West. It's just about the only thing moving out of Altoona in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. |

PC, View from Juniata's 17th Street Bridge, 1972 |
Description: |
Agnes. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here looking West from Juniata's 17th Street Bridge are the Penn Central's locomotive ready tracks. In the wake of Hurricane Agnes, there's not one locomotive to be seen! In the good old days of steam railroading, this was one of the busiest places in all of Altoona with locomotives being serviced 24/7/365. Nowadays, it's mostly rusting boxcars, waiting for the scrapper. |

Description: |
Agnes. Here is an image of a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in late June of 1972. Shown here (L to R) is Penn Central engine #4257 and five more GM-EMD E8A diesels passing Altoona's Passenger Trailer. They're on their way to surmounting the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a mail train bound for Pittsburgh and points West. It's one of the few trains moving in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. In the distance are the 7th Street Bridges. |

PRR Juniata River Railroad Bridge, 1960 |
Description: |
Agnes. Here is an original photo that I took in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1960. In addition to a westbound Pennsylvania Railroad freight train passing the HOLLY Block telephone, what's notable here is the typical depth of the water flowing under the Juniata River Railroad Bridge. It's hardly a trickle! Partially visible at the left is the US Route 22 highway bridge. Hollidaysburg's historic "Chimney Rocks" are just discernable at the right. |
